Embracing AI: Sem’s evolving journey in weather forecasting

19 February 2025

When Sem Vijverberg joined the Faculty of Impact from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, he was focused on developing a physics-guided machine learning approach for weather forecasting. Now, AI is rapidly transforming the field, and his venture is evolving alongside it.

“AI is slowly taking over a prominent part in weather forecasting,” Sem explains. “While we initially focused on physics-based methods, we now recognize the importance of AI innovation and the need to seize the opportunities it presents.”

A Shift in Technology and Market Exploration

Throughout the Faculty of Impact program, Sem and his team explored multiple markets while refining their core technology. Although their initial target market remains central to their work, the rapid advancements in AI have led them to expand their approach. “Machine learning and AI are playing an increasingly dominant role in weather forecasting,” Sem notes.

The Impact of Faculty of Impact

Reflecting on his time in the program, Sem highlights how it provided him with the space and guidance to navigate these shifts. “The biggest change for me has been adapting to a different core technology while keeping our vision intact,” he says. “The program gave us the tools to explore different markets and refine our strategy without feeling pressured to rush decisions before we were ready.”

Advice for Future Fellows

For those following in his footsteps, Sem offers a key piece of advice: “Don’t let yourself be rushed when you feel you’re not there yet.” The journey from research to entrepreneurship is filled with uncertainties, and taking the time to make informed decisions is crucial.”

With AI becoming an increasingly powerful force in weather prediction, Sem and his team are embracing the challenges and opportunities ahead—continuing to push the boundaries of innovation in a field that impacts us all.
